Roach Breeding
Enclosure Specifications
- Large scale breeding: a light-proof plastic bin with drilled ventilation holes on the lid.
- Small scale breeding: a small terrarium.
Heating
- Warm side: 80–90°F (27-32°C)
- Cool side: 70-75°F (21-24°C)
- A heat mat that sticks to the bottom of the terrarium is best for creating this gradient.
Hides/Substrate
- It is easiest to clean without substrate, and roaches prefer vertical climbing spaces. This can be achieved with egg crates.
Humidity
- Ideal humidity: 40-60%
- Maintaining humidity: provide a shallow water dish with a sponge to prevent drowning and mist the enclosure weekly
Diet
- High protein foods: cat food, fish flakes, food scraps
- Fresh fruits/vegetables
- Provide calcium for breeding females
- AVOID: citrus fruits, onion, garlic, avocado.
Sex Ratio
- 1 male per 2-3 females.
- Discoid: Females are larger, have wings that don’t cover the tip of their abdomen, and have a dark underbelly. Males are smaller, have wings that extend past the rear, and have a light, plated underbelly
- Dubia: Females are larger, have wings that don’t cover the tip of their abdomen, and have duller colors. Males are smaller and more elongated, have wings that extend past the rear, are vibrant in colors, and have a light, plated underbelly.
